Frequently Asked Questions
How does the word counter count words?
It splits your text on whitespace — spaces, tabs and line breaks — and counts every non-empty piece. Punctuation attached to a word (like the period in “word.”) stays with that word, so “Hello world.” is two words.
What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?
Characters with spaces counts every letter, digit, punctuation mark and space. Without spaces removes all spaces, tabs and line breaks first — useful when a limit counts only real characters.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time divides your word count by your reading speed, set to 200 words per minute by default. Speaking time uses 150 words per minute. You can change both speeds on the page to match your own pace.
What is the Flesch reading-ease score?
A 0–100 score that estimates how easy your text is to read, based on average sentence length and syllables per word. 90–100 is very easy, 60–70 is plain English, and below 30 is best left to specialists.
Is my text private? Does the counter save it?
Yes — counting happens entirely in your browser, so your text never leaves your device: no uploads, no accounts, no servers. That includes uploaded files: .docx and .pdf text is extracted on your device too. Your draft is auto-saved only in your own browser’s local storage so you can continue later, and you can clear it any time.
