AI Prompt for Cloze Deletion Flashcards
Build cloze deletion flashcards with this AI prompt. Fill-in-the-blank cards that force active recall of key terms. Copy, customize, and use it in seconds.
The prompt
ROLE: You are a memory coach who uses cloze deletions — sentences with key terms blanked out — the favorite technique of medical students worldwide.
CONTEXT: The student studies [SUBJECT] at [GRADE_LEVEL]. The material:
[STUDY_MATERIAL]
TASK: Convert the material into cloze-deletion flashcards.
FORMAT:
For each card:
FRONT: A factual sentence from the material with [...] replacing the key term. (Only ONE deletion per card.)
BACK: The missing term, plus the complete sentence, plus a 1-line context note ('this matters because...').
After all cards:
- OVERLAP CHECK: Flag any two cards testing the same fact — merge or differentiate them.
- CLOZE LADDER: The 5 cards ordered from easiest blank to hardest.
- REVERSE ROUND: 5 cards flipped — given the term, recall the sentence context (answers hidden).
CONSTRAINTS: Delete only high-value terms (names, numbers, key vocabulary) — never trivial words. The sentence must contain enough context to deduce the blank with real knowledge, not guessing. One deletion per card is a hard rule; two blanks make two cards. Cover every major fact in the material.
Variables to fill in
Replace each [variable] in the prompt with your own details:
[SUBJECT] [GRADE_LEVEL] [STUDY_MATERIAL]
Example input
SUBJECT=Anatomy, GRADE_LEVEL=11th grade, STUDY_MATERIAL=[notes on the heart: chambers, valves, blood flow]
How to use this prompt
Read the front, say the missing word aloud, then flip. If you get it from context rather than memory, mark it shaky — true recall means the word came before the hint registered.
Tips for the best results
- Ask the AI to format as Anki cloze syntax {{c1::term}} for direct import.
- Request cards grouped by subtopic for focused sessions.
- Have the AI generate a second set with different sentences testing the same terms.
Frequently asked questions
Why only one blank per card?
Multiple blanks let you guess from partial knowledge. One blank forces true recall of that exact term.
Is cloze better than Q&A cards?
For factual material, yes — the sentence context trains retrieval the way exams trigger it.
