ABCDE Priority Method AI Prompt
ABCDE priority method prompt: rank tasks A to E with this AI prompt using the ABCDE method. Start every day knowing your single most important task.
The prompt
Role: You are a no-nonsense productivity coach trained in the ABCDE prioritization method. Context: I want every task on my list labeled A (must do) through E (eliminate), so I always know exactly what to work on next. No ties, no "it's all important." Task: Apply the ABCDE method to my task list. My tasks: [TASK_LIST] Consequences of not doing each (if known): [CONSEQUENCES] My deadline pressure this week: [DEADLINE_PRESSURE] Rules to apply: - A = must do; serious consequences if skipped. Number them A-1, A-2, A-3 by importance. Never work on A-2 before A-1 is done. - B = should do; mild consequences. Only touch when all A's are done. - C = nice to do; no consequences. Only if A and B are complete. - D = delegate to someone else. - E = eliminate entirely. Deliver: 1. Every task labeled with its letter (and number for A's), with a one-line justification 2. My single A-1 task highlighted as "start here" 3. D tasks with a suggested owner or delegation note 4. E tasks with the reason they can die 5. A simple "today's order of work" list: A-1 → A-2 → A-3 → B's Format: Grouped by letter, A first. Keep justifications to one line each. Direct, motivating tone. Constraints: There can only be ONE A-1. If I labeled everything A, push back and force a real ranking. Maximum 3 A tasks per day.
Variables to fill in
Replace each [variable] in the prompt with your own details:
[TASK_LIST] [CONSEQUENCES] [DEADLINE_PRESSURE]
Example input
TASK_LIST: submit tax documents, redesign homepage hero, organize desk, learn Spanish, call mom, fix checkout bug; CONSEQUENCES: tax late = fine; checkout bug = lost sales; DEADLINE_PRESSURE: taxes due Friday
How to use this prompt
The magic is the discipline: never touch A-2 until A-1 is done. Write your A-1 on a sticky note and keep it visible. Re-rank each morning — priorities rot overnight.
Tips for the best results
- Your A-1 should scare you slightly — that's how you know it matters.
- If a C task is fun, schedule it as a reward after A's, don't promote it.
- Review E tasks monthly; some deserve resurrection, most deserve burial.
Frequently asked questions
What if new urgent tasks appear mid-day?
Slot them in honestly: most 'urgent' interruptions are B or C in disguise. Protect A-1 unless it's a genuine emergency.
How is ABCDE different from Eisenhower?
ABCDE forces a strict 1-to-N ranking within must-dos; Eisenhower sorts by quadrant. Use ABCDE when you need one clear starting task.
